It’s been 11 weeks since her life-changing plastic surgery but Heidi Montag is still very much healing.
“I’m very fragile,” she tells PEOPLE. “I’m not in a great place right now.”
The long road to recovery hasn’t been an easy one but Montag, 23, with weekly massages, exercise and therapy, has been working hard at the process. Still, setbacks like a stressful trip back home to Crested Butte, Colo., to confront her mom, have pushed back her healing some.
“I was hysterical the whole time,” she says of the trip. “It was so hurtful. My body really set back from recovering from all the crying, stress and that traumatic experience.”
Says Montag: “My insides were just throbbing and pounding but I know it’s part of what I had to go through.”
Despite the pain, Montag is very sure of one thing: there are no regrets. “I’m thrilled,” she says. “I’m the happiest I’ve ever been in my life.”

After keeping her family in the dark about getting 10 plastic surgery procedures in one day, Heidi Montag is finally heading home to Crested Butte, Colo., to confront her mom and reveal what she calls, “the new me.”
And camera crews for MTV’s The Hills are recording it all.
Montag — still in bandages she has to wear for portions of the day while her recovery continues — boarded a private jet bound for Colorado early Wednesday with her sister Holly.
The Hills star recently told PEOPLE her mom, Darlene Egelhoff, was horrified by the surgeries. “I still can’t believe I’m 23 and mom is reacting this way,” Montag said.
Despite conflicting reports that her mom was actually supportive of the surgeries, Montag told PEOPLE her mother didn’t know the extent of the procedures and only talked to her daughter after they were completed. At that point, her tune changed dramatically and Egelhoff became eager to confront Montag about going under the knife.

He may not have the best track record, but Spencer Pratt has stood by wife Heidi Montag in her decision to undergo 10 plastic surgery procedures in one day. But for the record: He wasn’t in favor of her total transformation.
For the past three years, while Montag has obsessed about her imperfections and eagerly planned her November surgery, Pratt was there to voice his very different opinion on things.
“Anytime I hinted that it might be a little much or if I just asked if she was sure, I even felt like I was crossing lines,” he told PEOPLE. “I’m not in charge of what she does with any part of her body. I’m her husband – not her owner.”
To Pratt, his wife of a year was perfect to begin with. “But everyone sees themselves differently when they look in the mirror,” he says. “Nobody truly understands how she feels except her. I may not be okay with things, but it’s not my call.”
Throughout the lengthy procedure and seven-week-plus recovery, Pratt, 26, played nurse – monitoring Montag, 23, and her health day and night. But the hardest part of all was seeing his wife post-surgery.
“Right after … it was the worst experience of my life,” Pratt said. “Nobody that loves a loved one should see that.”
And despite his difference of opinion on her having the surgery, Montag appreciates his honesty. “At the end of the day we do share a same opinion: It’s my body and I need to feel comfortable as a woman, as a person, and my inner beauty is always there and that’s what’s most important,” she says.
“His support has really been a lot and made such a difference. I couldn’t ask for more.”

When Heidi Montag underwent 10 plastic surgery procedures in one day, the Hills star kept her plans secret from friends – and even her family.
Now, nine weeks after her dramatic transformation, Montag is dealing with the horrified reaction of her mom, Darlene Egelhoff.
“I still can’t believe I’m 23 and mom is reacting this way,” Montag tells PEOPLE. “I’m nervous to go home and face her – especially with cameras rolling.”
A source close to the family tells PEOPLE that Egelhoff “is horrified and having a total breakdown. She can’t wait to confront Heidi when she goes home.”
Montag’s mom, who lives in Colorado where the reality star grew up, will get her wish soon. “Heidi is planning to head back to her small town of Crested Butte very soon,” says the source.
And Hills fans will get to see the drama play out next season on the MTV hit, as cameras will catch every moment.

Under fire for the staggering number of cosmetic procedures she’s recently undergone, Heidi Montag now says she isn’t addicted to plastic surgery – she just wants to be as beautiful as she can be, inside and out.
Asked on Tuesday’s Good Morning America for a response to those who say she is addicted, Montag, 23, replied: “I would say that none of those people know me at all, and that’s just a judgment. I’m not addicted. If I were addicted, I would have had 10 plastic surgeries.”
What she had, actually, was 10 procedures on the same day, back in November. This followed a previous surgery three years ago. In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Montag admitted she was “beyond obsessed” with having work done.
She is now backing away from that notion.
Asked why she would want to look like a Barbie doll, Montag replied: “I think I look like myself. I think I just look like a different, improved version of myself.”
Many observers are upset with the message that’s sent to young girls when an already attractive 23-year-old chooses to undergo so many alterations. But Montag says it’s her life – and in her line of work, alterations can be necessary.
“I’m in a different industry,” she said, “and I have to do things that are going to make me happy at the end of the day.”
She added: “I’m living in my skin, and I look in the mirror and it’s my career and my life, and you only have one. So, I want to take advantage of everything and be the best me, in and out, every way.”

It all started with a scarf.
When Heidi Montag walked into her house Wednesday with her face concealed, police were summoned with a report of a possible kidnapping. But after officers arrived in force – and briefly detained one of husband Spencer Pratt’s employees – the misunderstanding was all cleared up.
“We’re grateful this was only a false alarm and I just had my pink Hermes scarf over me,” Montag tells PEOPLE exclusively. “A neighbor was concerned and called the police. We’re thankful to the LAPD for their response and making sure we were safe.”
